At TH7 Byron Bay, we provide contrast therapy by combining high-heat sauna sessions with invigorating cold plunges. This unique approach not only speeds up recovery but also helps your nervous system relax. While many studios in Byron allow visitors to choose their own sauna and cold plunge routines, we take a different path. Our sessions are carefully planned with specific sequences and temperature goals, inspired by recovery techniques used by professional sports teams nationwide.
After a session, you’ll experience reduced muscle soreness and a noticeable calming effect from the deliberate heat and cold cycles. Many of our guests report improved sleep on the same night, which is often the first benefit they notice.
As soon as you get here, you will be able to change in our facilities and have a quick shower before heading into the protocol room. There is a distinct structure that needs to be followed. First, there is a heating phase where your body temperature is raised in order to dilate your blood vessels. Afterwards, you enter a cooling phase where the blood vessels will constrict, resulting in a fast circulation reaction. This cycle is repeated, culminating in a recovery period to ease your body back to equilibrium.
The variation between protocols lies in the duration spent in each phase and the sequence followed. These adjustments are based on solid research showing how heat and cold exposure influence circulation and inflammation. The sequence is carefully planned to maximise benefits. Our article on sauna before or after ice bath explains why we run heat first.
The Nordic protocol provides you with an extended session where your body and mind can be refreshed. It is done through cycles that are characterised by switching from hot temperatures (by using the sauna and steam room) to cold temperatures, where you will dip into the cold water. Throughout one hour, it is common to go through three to four of these cycles, which would result in a complete cleansing of the nervous system.
Each heat session lasts about 10 to 15 minutes. Afterwards, you plunge into cold water for 2 to 3 minutes, with the temperature set around 8°C. Between these cycles, you take the time to hydrate and allow your heart rate to return to normal before returning to the heat. This method is ideal for those undergoing intensive training weeks or seeking a significant recovery period between training phases.
The Express Protocol offers the same health benefits in just half an hour. It involves two cycles of an infrared sauna followed by a cold plunge, with short rest periods in between. The sauna sessions are brief yet intense, while the cold plunge remains consistent. This routine is perfect for hectic mornings, quick recovery during busy weekdays, or for those new to contrast therapy who prefer not to commit to a full hour.
The process has been thoroughly researched. When you expose yourself to heat, your core body temperature rises, prompting the activation of heat shock proteins that play a crucial role in repairing cells. This response is why saunas are great for recovering after a workout. As your body attempts to cool down, blood vessels widen. On the flip side, when you experience cold, your blood vessels narrow, norepinephrine levels increase, and brown fat kicks in to produce heat through metabolism.
Many people have been observed to benefit significantly in various ways. The muscle recovery process occurs faster since there is less swelling and increased blood flow to the muscles that have been exhausted. Sleep patterns improve after workouts since there is a significant amount of deep sleep. People will feel less stress because the parasympathetic nervous system is stimulated during the resting period.
Many contrast therapy marketing campaigns emphasise removing toxins and heavy metals, but the science behind these claims is weak. What research does support includes benefits like improved cardiovascular health, decreased muscle soreness, and better insulin sensitivity from consistent sauna sessions. Additionally, regular sauna use can significantly enhance mood and sleep. These are the real benefits worth focusing on.
Contrast therapy provides a range of advantages for several groups of people, such as athletes who want to speed up recovery, professionals who seek to relieve their stress levels, and individuals aged 40 and above interested in maintaining their well-being and cardiovascular health. Newcomers to the practice find it especially valuable since it provides a structured approach that is more reliable than improvising with a backyard ice bath.
However, it’s crucial to consult a doctor if you are pregnant, have heart issues, low blood pressure, or a recent injury. The intensity of the cold plunge and the overall therapy might not suit everyone, and professional advice will ensure it aligns with your health needs.

TH7 partners with top sports teams like the Brisbane Broncos, Wallabies, Brisbane Lions, Brisbane Bullets, NSW Blues, and the Dolphins to ensure they recover effectively after games and throughout their training sessions. We focus on creating protocols that cater to their specific needs, providing equipment and strategies that meet clinical standards and deliver consistent physiological benefits.
At the Byron Bay studio, you experience the same high-quality equipment and protocols used by those professional teams. Both the Nordic and Express Protocols are rooted in the same scientific research that supports elite athletes. They’ve been carefully designed to benefit everyone, whether you’re a professional rugby player travelling for a match or a local stopping by for a quick 30-minute refresh before heading to work.
You can choose between casual visits and memberships, with flexible packages for frequent visitors who aren’t ready for a full commitment. If you’re spending a few days in Byron, you can easily squeeze in a casual session before heading to the beach or after catching some waves. To secure your spot at a convenient time, book online or reach out if you need any guidance.
The Nordic protocol lasts for about 60 minutes, counting change-over time and rest breaks. The Express protocol lasts 30 minutes. Give yourself 10-15 minutes each way to allow some leeway at either end for travel time and a shower.
The golden rule would be two to four sessions weekly. If training intensely, it would be good to have three to four contrast sessions per week in order not to expose yourself to too much cold. Otherwise, two sessions weekly will do when it comes to overall well-being and better sleep quality.
Exposure to either heat or cold imposes an actual physiological load on the body’s circulatory system. If you suffer from a cardiovascular problem, hypertension, hypotension, are pregnant, or are living with a long-term illness, consult your doctor before beginning contrast treatment. Most individuals in generally good physical condition can tolerate contrast procedures successfully, but not everyone does.
You don’t necessarily have to take part in the cold plunge. Many people don’t bother with it during their first few sessions and work their way up over time. There is plenty that you will gain from just the heat session and the steam bath alone, particularly for sleep and circulation. If you’re working up to it, how long to ice bath for recovery is a useful read.
Please come with swimwear and a water bottle. Towels will be provided, but bringing your own is also an option if you prefer. Eat some light food and drink plenty of water. Avoid heavy alcohol the night before if you can.
