Red light therapy has gained significant attention in the field of recovery science these days. At TH7, we view it as a crucial element in our recovery strategies rather than just a cosmetic enhancement. The studies exploring its effects on collagen production, muscle recovery, mitochondrial function, and inflammatory response show encouraging results.
At every TH7 studio, we focus on seven essential wellness practices, with red light therapy playing a key role in our recovery routines. You can have red light therapy on its own, or you can have it in combination with the infrared sauna and a cold plunge pool to form an all-encompassing therapy session. The panels we use emit both red light (which operates at around 660 nanometres) and near infrared light (which operates at around 850 nanometres). This dual approach means each session not only rejuvenates the skin but also supports deeper tissue healing.
When red and infrared light are used at certain wavelengths, the rays have the ability to enter into the skin and reach the mitochondria, which are the powerhouses of the cells. Through absorption, the waves not only help to produce ATP, which is the energy produced in our cells, but they also decrease oxidative stress. This phenomenon, called photobiomodulation, is highly backed by scientific evidence. There are other physiological changes that follow, and these can include improved skin, muscles, joints, and even nerve activity, each supported by scientific studies in their own right.
Red light therapy research that focuses on skin benefits has revealed how effective this treatment can be for skin health. When red light is used in the range of 630-660 nanometres, it helps stimulate fibroblasts. These cells are crucial as they generate collagen and elastin, which contribute to youthful skin. In a 2014 study featured in Photomedicine and Laser Surgery, researchers conducted a controlled trial where participants underwent 30 LED treatment sessions. Improved skin complexion and skin elasticity were observed, with a significant increase in collagen content. Participants also reported reduced formation of fine lines and improved skin condition.
Where acne is concerned, each colour of light brings its own value to the treatment process. Blue light takes care of the bacteria that cause acne breakouts, while red light helps decrease inflammation in order to heal active acne. Through light therapy, increased blood flow will help lessen redness and skin regeneration in the interval between procedures. When it comes to skin conditions such as pigmentation and age spots, however, it may take several months of treatment before any significant results can be achieved.
Near-infrared light, especially wavelengths between 800 and 850 nm, can penetrate deep enough to stimulate muscles and joints. This has led to exciting studies about recovery techniques. A study published in 2016 in Lasers in Medical Science analysed various controlled trials on photobiomodulation. Results were positive in that using light therapy before and after exercising decreased indicators of muscle damage and increased recovery times.
Proposed methods consist of reducing oxidative stress on muscles during exercise, improving blood flow through the release of nitric oxide, changing the body’s inflammatory process, and increasing ATP in muscle cells. For individuals who are constantly dealing with joint pain or sore muscles due to working out, red light therapy presents a simple solution.
Some studies suggest that exposure to red light in the evening may shift the activity of the parasympathetic nervous system, aiding in falling asleep, especially when it replaces blue-heavy lighting before bedtime. A few small studies have also observed that morning exposure to red light might enhance mood and emotional stability, though the number of participants in these studies is limited.
What we can say for sure is that most people feel more relaxed after the experience, having slept better that same night. The question remains whether it is the result of the effect of light or simply due to lying down quietly for 15 minutes, but the result is good enough.

Red light therapy offers significant benefits on its own, but when combined with heat and cold treatments, its advantages become even more pronounced. At TH7 Byron Bay, you have the option to enjoy a standalone red light therapy session. Alternatively, you can integrate it into a comprehensive wellness routine that includes both the infrared sauna and a cold plunge for a more enhanced experience.
A common routine begins with a sauna session to elevate your body temperature and enhance blood circulation. This is followed by a plunge into cold water, which causes blood vessels to constrict and helps reduce inflammation. To complete the process, red light therapy is used. The initial heat and subsequent cold improve blood flow, allowing the red light to penetrate tissues more effectively. Afterwards, the cooldown helps transition your body into a relaxed, parasympathetic state before you finish. The sequence is crucial for maximising benefits, and we’ve broken down sauna before or after ice bath in more detail. While many providers offer red light therapy as a separate LED treatment, we incorporate it as a part of a comprehensive recovery program, aligning with how professional sports teams we collaborate with utilise it.
At the Byron Bay studio, everyone from regular members to casual visitors can access the same recovery equipment and methods trusted by top sports teams like the Broncos, Wallabies, Brisbane Lions, Brisbane Bullets, NSW Blues, and Dolphins. These teams depend on TH7 to help them bounce back between training sessions and games, and now you can too!
Casual visits, packs, memberships and intro options are all available. Register your interest online to be among the first to know when doors open. To secure your spot at a convenient time, book online or reach out if you need any guidance.
A standard treatment lasts for 10 to 20 minutes. This is sufficient time for the waves to do their work at the cellular level without the diminishing benefits that come with longer periods of exposure.
To achieve the best results for recovery and skin health, the number of LED treatments per week should fall between three and five. However, even just two treatments per week have proven effective, especially when combined with sauna use and cold therapy.
Changes to the skin typically occur in six to eight weeks. The improvements from recovery occur relatively quickly, usually in the first few treatments following tough workouts. Mood and sleep effects, where they happen, also tend to show up early.
Red light with a wavelength of 630 to 660 nm is visible, and it acts on the surface layers of the skin to promote collagen growth and reduce fine lines. Near infrared light has a wavelength of 800 to 850 nm and acts at a much deeper level by targeting muscles and joints to provide therapeutic value. TH7’s panels deliver both.
Yes. Red light therapy is a non-invasive procedure and has undergone testing on many skin tones without any bad reactions. There is no risk of burning or tanning since red light therapy does not use UV wavelengths.
For those on photosensitive medicines and for people who have epileptic fits that are triggered by light, a discussion with your physician would be essential prior to booking.
The more exposed the body part being treated is, the better. Swimwear is ideal. Eye protection is available and used throughout the treatment process.
