At our Gold Coast studio, the steam room runs as part of structured recovery protocols rather than as a standalone spa feature. If you’re after a steam room treatment on the Gold Coast, here’s what a session with us actually involves.
The steam room is one of seven recovery techniques available at our facilities, and it’s rarely used on its own. It usually sits inside a combination routine alongside other techniques, with the specific mix depending on what you’re training for.
The room runs at an average of 43°C to 46°C, with humidity that can reach close to 100%. The moist air opens your airways and brings on a sweat faster than dry sauna heat does. That same humidity softens the skin, which is part of what sets a steam session apart from the dry heat of a regular sauna on the face and chest.
A steam room session runs 10 to 15 minutes on average. In a contrast session, you move between the steam room and either a cold plunge pool or a contrast tub, alternating heat and cold so your blood vessels dilate and constrict in turn.
A single steam session is pleasant on its own, clearing the sinuses and producing a short-lived parasympathetic, calming effect. The larger physiological changes, the ones tied to circulation, recovery and vascular adaptability, come from alternating heat and cold rather than from heat alone, which is why we build the steam room into a contrast sequence. The vascular “pumping” effect this creates is well described, though it’s worth knowing the research on contrast therapy is still mixed: studies suggest it can outperform passive rest for muscle soreness, but its benefits may be comparable to other recovery methods such as cold-water immersion.
The Nordic Protocol cycles you through a traditional sauna, a contrast pool, the steam room and a cold plunge, in an order designed to move metabolic waste out of fatigued tissue via circulation while leaving you mentally sharper. This is how contrast therapy works in practice: the alternating hot and cold exposure forces your vascular system to adapt. It’s the same general approach Scandinavian athletes have used for decades, and a protocol professional teams like the Broncos and Wallabies rely on for in-season recovery.
If you’ve pushed yourself hard or you’re feeling DOMS after a workout, the Recover Protocol starts by warming the tissues with steam, then moves into contrast therapy to drive blood flow through the muscles you’ve worked. A round of lymphatic drainage follows, which helps shift that heavy-legged feeling.
When you train five or more times a week, recovery becomes the limiting factor, not effort. Using steam within a contrast process shortens the gap between hard sessions and supports better overnight heart rate variability recovery, so you turn up to your next session ready for it.
For office workers, parents, shift workers and anyone carrying a daily stress load, the value of the steam room is in how it affects the nervous system. The warmth shifts the body towards a parasympathetic state: your breathing slows and your shoulders drop. Bringing cold into the sequence afterwards triggers an adrenaline response that lifts focus for the rest of the day.
TH7 is a recovery and longevity studio. Our programs are structured and run to a set timeline based on the physiological changes each modality produces. We’ve invested in traditional saunas, contrast pools, cold plunges, compression and hyperbaric oxygen therapy because the focus is recovery and longevity, not a relaxing afternoon out. If you want to be pampered with sound therapy and a facial, a Gold Coast bathhouse is the better fit. If you want something that moves the needle on your recovery, training and sleep, come and see us.
First-timers usually start with either the Nordic or Recover Protocol, so you experience the steam room in the sequence it’s designed to sit in. Book through our website, pack a swimsuit and water, and arrive 10 minutes early so we can walk you through it.
For most people, two to four sessions a week works well. Those training intensely, like athletes, might come in daily when following contrast protocols. If you’re just starting out, two sessions a week is a sensible base, and you can let your sleep and HRV guide the rest. We’ve covered the trade-offs of using a steam room every day in more detail if you want the longer view.
The steam room is built into our protocol sessions rather than offered as a separate booking. That’s deliberate: the benefits of steam come from how it combines with sauna and cold therapy.
Swimmers, a reusable water bottle, and thongs or slides. Bring a change of clothes too. We provide towels and everything else you need on site.
Heat raises your heart rate and affects your blood pressure, so if you have cardiovascular disease or you’re pregnant, talk to your GP before booking. Once you’re cleared, we can adjust the protocol for more conservative pacing.
