TH7 Gut Health Dietitian Brisbane

Many Australians experience some form of gut discomfort or gastrointestinal distress during their lifetime. While some of us have genuine food intolerances, a range of lifestyle behaviours can affect our gut everyday, resulting in mild to moderate bloating, constipation or reflux.

Food intolerances or sensitivities not always to blame for these symptoms. Other factors that affect our digestive function include inadequate fibre intake, lack of sleep, high stress levels, sedentary behaviour, alcohol consumption, fluid intake, and eating behaviours.

However, some of us do have difficulty digesting certain foods and need to take further action.

How can a gut health dietitian help you understand your symptoms & restore digestive function?

IBS is a condition that impacts approximately 10-20% of the population, with a higher prevalence among women. The typical symptoms of IBS include lower abdominal pain and discomfort, cramping, reflux, and alternating bouts of diarrhoea and constipation.

How these symptoms present will differ from person to person. While some individuals with IBS may primarily experience abdominal discomfort and bloating, others might struggle with episodes of diarrhoea, constipation, or a combination of both.

The majority of those affected by chronic IBS will need to explore strategies to manage these symptoms to improve their quality of life.

A dietitian can help you determine your IBS triggers and work through an elimination diet and reintroduction plan while monitoring your symptoms throughout. The plan may look a little something like this:

Identifying food triggers

A gut health dietitian helps identify food triggers causing digestive issues by assessing your diet and symptoms, using elimination diets, and conducting tests to create a personalised eating plan for better gut health.

Elimination phase to remove possible triggers

The elimination phase involves temporarily removing certain foods from your diet that are suspected of causing digestive issues, allowing your body to reset and identify any potential triggers.

Slow reintroduction of these triggers

The slow reintroduction phase involves gradually adding the eliminated foods back into your diet, one at a time, to monitor your body’s response and pinpoint which specific foods may be causing digestive problems.

Maintenance phase

The maintenance phase involves establishing a long-term eating plan that incorporates the safe foods identified during the elimination and reintroduction phases, helping you maintain optimal gut health and prevent digestive issues.

Never seen a gut health dietitian? What to expect

This personalised and practical program will guide you through living and eating in a way that supports your digestive system, without feeling restricted or deprived.

We will take a step back and look at everything from sleep and stress to daily movement, as these can all have an impact on our poor gut health.

We will eliminate foods if necessary, then reintroduce them if possible or find alternatives to maximise enjoyment as well as your overall nutrition intake.

If there are any secondary goals, these will be considered along the way and will become the key focus of your program once your healthy gut symptoms are well managed.

Our goal, as always, is to create sustainable changes, protect your health and help our clients feel better every day.
